Both methods do the same thing: pull the video transcript, hand it to ChatGPT, and read the summary instead of watching. Method 1 uses YouTube and ChatGPT alone. Method 2 adds a Chrome extension so long transcripts still get through.

YouTube transcript → ChatGPT

Best for videos whose transcript still fits inside ChatGPT.

Open the YouTube video you want to summarize.

Scroll down and click the “...more” dots to expand the description.

Click Show transcript. The full transcript opens in a panel at the top right.

In that panel, open the three dots and choose Toggle timestamps — this removes all the time codes you don’t need.

Select all the text and copy it: Command + C on a Mac, Control + C on a PC.

Open ChatGPT, paste the transcript, and send this prompt:

Prompt Summarize with bullet points the following YouTube video transcript. Use fewer words.

Chrome extension for long videos

The workaround for when the transcript is too long and ChatGPT won’t accept it.

Search for “YouTube summary extension for Chrome”.

Click Install extension.

Go back to YouTube and pick a much longer video — the example is a nearly one-hour video from Alex Heros.

Once installed, a small box appears at the top. Click the down arrow so the entire transcript shows up.

Skip the Summary option — that one is a paid premium feature (Glasp). Choose Transcript instead.

Click the ChatGPT icon. A window opens, the transcript is filled in automatically, and the summary is generated for you.

Worth Remembering

Toggle the timestamps off first — the time codes add bulk and no meaning.
If the transcript is too long, ChatGPT simply won’t accept it. That’s the moment to switch to Method 2.
The extension’s built-in “Summary” button is a premium feature; the free path is Transcript plus the ChatGPT icon.
Nothing here is complicated — the value comes from copying the transcript cleanly and using one clear prompt.
